ASUU is being sued by FUTO over Pantami’s professorship.

The administration of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has filed a lawsuit against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for refusing to promote Isa Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, to the level of Professor of Cyber Security.

Prof. Nnenna Oti, FUTO’s Vice Chancellor, made the declaration after ASUU threatened to censure her and those involved in Pantami’s promotion to Professor.

After revealing that the case is already in court, Oti refused to go further. According to a top management employee who talked to The Nation on the condition of anonymity, ASUU has no right to intervene in a matter over which it has no jurisdiction.

The employees stated:

“Just like ASUU does not tell the university council and its Senate who to promote, it cannot tell them the criteria for promoting somebody to rank of professor. In law, you cannot withdraw what you don’t have. ASUU does not regulate appointments and promotions. Some of these things are derived from NUC guidelines, and every university sets up its standard.”
